How To Manually Update iPad To Any iOS Firmware

I’m an iPad2 GSM user, and I guess I bought it around September 2011 and even after so many iteration (iPad mini, iPad 3, iPad4), I decided to stick to iPad2, as I have minimal use of iPad. I usually use it for reading and browsing internet, and most of the time for writing tutorials and making apps tutorial videos for my Youtube channel. Before iOS7.x jailbreak was released by evasi0n, my iPad was running on iOS6 and now it’s time to update it to latest iOS7 version. Somehow when I was trying to update my iPad to latest iOS firmware automatically, it gave me error and the only way to update it to latest version is by manual update.

Guide to Update iPad Firmware Manually

In manual iPad update, we download the latest firmware version of iOS or desired firmware of iOS on your computer manually, and use iTunes update feature to manually update iPad. In this guide I will be sharing how I updated my iPad 2 to latest iOs 7.0.4 version, and you can follow the same process toupdate or downgrade to any firmware version (Provided it allows that and is compatible).  The only difference with other iOS version would be, you will require to manually download the .ipsw file of firmware you want to install on your Apple iPad.
Here are the direct download link for iOs 7.0.4 for iPad 2.
  • iPad 2 (Wi-Fi) (iPad2,1) version 7.0.4 (Build 11B554a), Download
  • iPad 2 (GSM) (iPad2,2) version 7.0.4 (Build 11B554a), Download
  • iPad 2 (CDMA) (iPad2,3) version 7.0.4 (Build 11B554a), Download
  • iPad2,4 (iPad2,4) version 7.0.4 (Build 11B554a), Download
Download the firmware depending upon the iPad model you are using.
So I assume you have already downloaded the .ipsw file, and now follow the steps mentioned below. I’m performing this task on my Mac OS, and for the Windows process will be the same, with difference of Key stroke.

How to manually Install iOS7 on iPad:

Don’t forget to take complete backup of your iPad before you follow these steps, as you can always restore your iPad back if something goes wrong.
  • Connect your iPad to your computer and open iTunes.
  • On your iTunes you will see the update button to update the iPad to latest firmware.
  • If you are on Machold ‘option’ button on your Keyboard and click on check for updates, and manually browse the download iOS firmware file, and use it to update your iPad.
  • If you are on Windows, You need to hold ‘Shift’ Key instead of option.
Manually Update iPad
  • Now browse the firmware file and select it. You will get a message like “iTunes will update your iPad to iOS 7.0.x and will verify the update with Apple.” Click on update and it will start installing the selected .ipsw file.
  • It will take couple of minutes to update iPad to latest iOS7 firmware, so go and grab your coffee by the time iTunes update your iPad.
Note: In my case (updating iPad2 on iOS6 to iOS 7.0.4) it gave me an Error code 6, and I had to repeat the process, but next time I selected “Restore iPad” + option key to manually select the firmware. I also had iPhone5 cable connected to other port, and according to Apple help file, we should remove all other connected cables. Next time I got another error “Error 3014” and again I repeated the same process of restoring. I had to repeat the process 10+ times to make it work, and finally my iPad was restored and updated to latest iOS 7.0.4 firmware.
You might need to set up your iPad as a new device, and later on you can use restore backup feature of iTunes to restore all apps and iPad settings back to your updated iPad.

15 Facts You Did Not Know About the iPhone

Every time a new iPhone is released, people line up for days just to buy one. Sure, it looks cool. But do you know anything else about it aside from what the blogs and news sites tell you? I’ve compiled a few facts and trivia for you to think about while you play with your iPhone.
Right now many of you might be using iPhone5S, and many of Apple fan boy like me must be waiting for iPhone6 with an amazing design. For now, lets look at some of the interesting facts about iPhone that I’m sure you are unaware of.

Hey Apple Fan boy’z : Check out these awesome iPhone facts

1. Apple’s iPhone wasn’t the first iPhone. Before Apple ever released the iPhone, Cisco Systems had originally patented the name. In fact, they sued Apple for calling its smartphone an iPhone. The Cisco iPhone was a VOIP phone that allowed users to call through Skype without having to use a computer. Both companies reached a settlement, and have now happily kept their rights to the name.

2. The first ever iPhone was conceptualized in 1983. Way back in 1983, Apple computer developer Hartmut Esslinger designed a landline phone that reflected iPhone and iPad features today with a stylus-controlled interface. It never saw the light of day, but it’s good to know that Apple had already been playing with iPhone ideas a long time ago. Think of how the smartphone landscape would look today if that 1983 prototype had been released.

3. The App Store was the first place to legally download an app. One of the most revolutionary aspects of the iPhone was the App Store, wherein users could legally download apps for free or for a fee.

4. There’s a Bono in every iPhone. Look closely, and you’ll see that the Artists icon in your Music app is actually the silhouette of U2 singer Bono.

5. It’s always 9:42am in iPhone ads. Apple events start at 9am and the ads are timed to appear about 40 minutes into the presentations. Since Apple knows the lead-up doesn’t take exactly 40 minutes, they pad it by a minute or two. More recent ads have now moved to 9:41.

6. Samsung makes iPhone’s processors. Samsung and Apple may be archrivals in the smartphone arena, but that’s not stopping Apple from contracting Samsung to make its computer chips. They still trash each other’s phones, though.

7. iPhones made texting the in thing. Over 22% of people now believe that sending a SMS is easier than calling, all because of how Apple presented SMS.

8. iPhone was Invention of the Year. The Apple iPhone was considered so revolutionary that Time Magazine named it Invention of the Year in 2007.

9. The iPhone was named Purple. Back when the iPhone was being developed, the codename for the as-yet unnamed phone was “Purple“. iPhone developers even called their section in the Apple headquarters the “Purple Dorm”.

10. Cydia is not just a random name. Jailbreaking software Cydia was named after the worm cydia pomonella, which is thought to be the most common apple worm. Cydia creator Jay Freeman probably thought he was being clever.

11. iPhone 4 ushered in Antennagate. The iPhone 4′s new metal design caused widespread problems among users after it was discovered that calls were getting disconnected when the phone was held a certain way. It became such a serious issue that it even earned the moniker Antennagate.

12. Retina screen is the most expensive part. The iPhone’s Retina screen is the most expensive component at a whopping $28.50. Of course, this doesn’t take into account the design, assembly or even branding of the phone, which is why it still costs over $200.

13. 200 patents, 1 iPhone. Since the iPhone was released in 2007, Apple has owned more than 200 patents relating to the iPhone’s technology. That’s a lot of patents for one small phone.

14. The Jesus phone. Some media people dubbed the iPhone the “Jesus phone” due to the near-religious fervor among Apple fans that met the first iPhone announcement.

15. Steve Jobs punk’d Starbucks. When Apple CEO Steve Jobs first introduced the iPhone in 2007, he made a prank call to a nearby Starbucks and ordered 4,000 lattes. He cancelled it immediately, which was probably a good thing for the poor barista who took that call.

When iOS 7 was launched, I knew I had to wait for a long time to get untethered jailbreak for my iPhone5, and I was using my iPhone without any jailbreak. Thanks to many amazing features of iOS7 like call blocker, Live wallpaper, I didn’t really miss iOS7 jailbreak for long. But now, we have iOS7 untethered jailbreak is available, and so many amazing Cydia tweaks are being released every day, it’s right time to Jailbreak your iPhone5 or 5S running on iOS7and install awesome Cydia tweaks. The first version of Evasi0n jailbreak tool for iOS7 when launched had few bugs, so I waited for couple of days to ensure that all the bugs are fixed, and now at the time of writing, current version of 1.0.2 which fixed many bugs, and now you candownload Evasi0n and start the process. You can download the latest version fro official Evasi0n website over here.
Download the latest version depending upon OS you are using and follow the instructions given below. In my case, I’m using an iPhone5 running iOS 7.0.4and I’m on Mac OS.
Also before you start the iOS7 untethered jailbreak process, ensure that you do the following:
  • If you are using Passlock on your iPhone, disable it.
  • Current updated version of Evasi0n supports untethered jailbreak up toiOS 7.0.4, so make sure you update your iPhone to latest firmware. If iOS 7.0.5 is released, I would suggest you to check with Evasi0n official website for an update.

In this case, select the evasion 7 file and right click on and click on Open> and again open to make this work for you. 10 iOS 7 Features Every Apple Fanboy Should Know

In my last post, I mentioned about iPhone5S, and helped you to make a decision on to sell or not to sell your iPhone5 for 5S. As soon as Apple announced the release of iOS 7, I rushed to find out all that I could about the newest OS and waited with bated breath for the inevitable Update button to appear on my screen. Now, even if you are running iPhone5, I recommend you to update to iOS7, as this new version of iOS firmware, offers some great and much needed features like contact blocker, Audio only FaceTime call and so on.
One of the good thing about every updated version of iOS firmware is: It integrates all important features of Cydia in it. One of the major reason we end up jailbreaking our iPhone is to enjoy more power in terms of getting more features. For example, before iOS7, Sbsettings used to be a great Cydia hack, and with iOS7, you can simply ignore it. Similarly features like call blocker, live wallpapers were earlier possible after installing Cydia on your iPhone, and with new features of iOS, it’s integrated within the phone itself. Today, I will be sharing some of the notable features of iOS 7, which you should know.
ios7 iphone features1
1. Folders can hold as many apps as you want
You can now put as many apps as you can in one folder, as Apple has lifted the limits on the number of apps per folder in iOS 7. If you want, you can even put ALL of your apps in one folder and get a clean home screen.
2. Messages have timestamps
One of the most annoying aspects of Messages in iOS was the lack of timestamps in your messages. iOS 7 has improved on that and now you can check what time each message was sent or received. All you need to do is swipe over from the right side of the conversation to see the timestamps.
3. Let the App Store update your apps for you
In iOS versions past, you had to manually go to App Store just to update your apps. Miss updating a few days, and you’d find yourself having to update more than 10 apps at once. With iOS 7, you can now set the App Store to auto-update every app and to turn off updating when using cellular data.
4. Use Siri to handle your calls
Siri can now be your own personal secretary – just ask her. You can have her play your voicemails for you, or call back a contact whose call you just missed. Don’t like Siri as a girl? Change it to a more masculine voice by going to Settings.
5. Make audio-only FaceTime calls
Take the face out of FaceTime when you make calls to other iOS or OS X users. There are now two options when making calls. Just click on the phone icon to call your friends without having to show your face. It’s also a great way to save on cellular minutes. This is very handy for those who are on limited data plans, and are using Facetime for making calls, as audio only Facetime call will consume less data.
6. Don’t let Apple track your movements
Did you know that Apple had introduced ad tracking back in iOS 6? I wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t; not many people do. It was supposed to track your browsing activity in order to send targeted ads to your phone. But now you can disable tracking if you want to, right under the Privacy settings.
7. Block unwanted callers and messages
Block iPhone caller
Time to start blocking all those annoying callers and messages on your phone. iOS 7 now lets you block a contact from calling you or sending you messages. You can block a contact from calling you by going to Contact Details and clicking Block this Caller. Manage blocked messages by going to Messages under Settings and clicking Blocked. This applies to both iMessages and FaceTime. I personally find this feature very useful, as this helps me to get rid of those annoying unwanted people to call me. If you need a tutorial on how to block people on iOS, do let me know, and I will add it up on the next post.
8. Wipe your device after many failed attempts
I have a password on my phone, like everyone else, because I need to protect data on it. To protect this data, iOS 7 now has an option to Erase Data after 10 failed password attempts.
9. Get Night Mode for maps
Who wants a blinding white light while driving? Not me. Apple Maps now automatically adjusts the map interface to darken based on the time of day. You don’t even need to turn anything on; this feature is here to say whether you like it or not.
10. Compass App has a spirit level
Your iPhone can now double as a tool with the built-in spirit level. Swipe to the second page where you’ll find a minimalist bubble level surface that you can use. Just line it up until you get a balanced zero degrees, which means everything’s all straight.
How about you? Have you updated your iOS, or are you still on the fence and can’t decide?  There are a lot of hidden gems in iOS 7, and these are just some of them. If you know of any other iOS7 Features that we missed, do let me know via comments.

Should You Sell Your iPhone 5 For An iPhone 5S?

Everytime Apple release a new iPhone, I seriously start looking into my bank account, as being an Apple fan boy, I always want to hold the latest gadget from Apple. But in recent time, Apple has started disappointing me, by launching new series of iPhone with same design and few additional features. For a person like me, design of the phone matters a lot, and if you can’t differentiate between two models, it doesn’t feel worth the money. Recently Apple launched iPhone5S and iPhone 5C, and according to new reports, Apple have already reduced the production of 5C. Anyways, if you are an iPhone5 user, I’m sure you must be wondering if you should sale your iPhone5 for 5S model?
Let me help with some of the key differences between iPhone5 Vs. iPhone5S, which will help you to make a buying decision. I will also share my opinion at the end of this comparison post.

iPhone5 Vs. iPhone 5S: Know the difference

Seen at first glance, the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S look very much alike. However, it’s what’s inside that should matter if you’re looking to upgrade your handset. The iPhone 5S has a few major changes and some other incremental improvements, but are these changes enough to replace your iPhone 5?
Design
Physically, there are minute differences between the two phones. The most noticeable difference in front is the new home button. The iconic rounded square has been replaced with a sapphire crystal button that now houses a new fingerprint sensor. The back of the new iPhone 5S also has a new oblong-shaped dual flash to the right of the camera lens, while the “iPhone” logo sports the new font to match iOS 7′s Helvetica Neue Ultra Light typeface.
iPhone5s Color
Another major difference is the color. While the iPhone 5 was limited to either black or white, the iPhone 5S has added a snazzy new champagne gold colorand replaced plain old black with a muted space gray.
Processor
Apple A7 Processor
The processor has gone a notch up from the A6 chip on the iPhone 5 to the Apple A7 chip on the iPhone 5S. The new chip boasts of twice the processing and graphics performance on the iPhone 5S. This means that the iPhone 5S launches apps much faster, andplays graphic-intensive games, all while delivering amazing uptime.
In addition to the A7 chip, the iPhone 5S also runs on the new M7 motion co-processor that handles the load from the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass. It handles some of the low-level background tasks that would otherwise tax the main processor, ensuring improved power efficiency and longer battery life.
Camera
Another significant improvement was made to the iPhone 5S camera. The iPhone 5S is still equipped with the same 8-megapixel iSight camera as the iPhone 5, but it now has a new five-element lens with larger f/2.2 aperture. The new sensor has also improved, with a 15% in active sensor area. Both of these improvements mean that the iPhone 5S delivers better low-light performance than its predecessor.
The iPhone 5S has replaced iPhone 5′s single LED flash with a new dual-LED Two Tone Flash. One bulb is cool and white, while the other is warm and amber. These and the new camera feature means that the iPhone 5S mixes the two tones to get the right color balance for every shot.
Battery
The iPhone 5S has a larger capacity battery rated at 1,540 mAh over the iPhone 5′s 1,440 mAh. However, the iPhone 5S also has a faster processor and other new enhancements that eat up battery life, making battery uptime about the same for both phones.
Touch ID
iPhon fingerprint sensor
The new home button houses the newest feature of the iPhone 5S, the fingerprint sensor called Touch ID. This new sensor is tied to the phone’s security and authentication feature. The sapphire crystal capacitive touch sensor is used to record your fingerprint, which can be used to unlock the phone or authorize purchases from the iTunes store, app store or Bookstore instead of having to enter your Apple ID password.

Should you upgrade to iPhone5S?

With all these new features, the question remains: should you upgrade?
Consider if all the internal upgrades are worth the extra cash to upgrade to a phone that looks almost exactly the same as your current one. There are also rumors that the upcoming iPhone 6 may have bigger changes like a revamped design and even bigger improvements. For me, I will currently stick to my iPhone5, and will wait for Apple to launch iPhone6 with a brilliant futuristic design. However, if you are a loyal Apple fan, I would like to hear your opinion and suggestion for current iPhone 5 users. Do you think iPhone5 users should sell their iPhone for iPhons5S model?

5 Useful Cydia Tweaks for iPhone Users

I was eagerly waiting for iPhone 5 untethered jailbreak, and thanks to evasi0n, now my iPhone 5 is running iOS 6.1, with untethered jailbreak. iPad user can find a complete video guide here. Now, it’s time for me to find few best cydia apps for iPhone 5. Right now, I’m installing all popular cydia tweaks which are made for iPhone5, and in couple of days, I will share the final list.  There are a lot of tweaks present at the Cydia Store, and you need to have a jailbroken iPhone in order to use them. Here you will get to see a list of 5 useful Cydia tweaks for iPhone5 users.

Useful Cydia Tweaks for iPhone5 on iOS 6.1:

Before I share the tweaks, I highly recommend you to follow this cydia sources list, and add all the popular repos. Also, install these app, which will make your jailbreak worth it:
Dash
The first tweak on the list is by the name Dash. It was announced last month, and it’s now available on Cydia. It’s a very useful jailbreak app. It’s a replacement for the App Switcher with some additional features like:
  • A native iOS look and feel.
  • Ease in switching between the running apps.
  • Five different animation styles like scroll, coverFlow, wheel, rotary, time machine, etc.
  • Running apps can be closed by swiping up
The tweak can be accessed using an Activator action. It’s available on Cydia for $1.99. You can find it through the ModMyi repo. The final version doesn’t provide quick access to the music controls as well as the orientation lock.
MissionBoard Pro
This is another new tweak that’s meant to replace the iOS App Switcher. This tweak allows users to access the music controls, volume control along with the album artwork in the background, the brightness slider, orientation toggle and the AirPlay control by simply swiping to the left side of the screen.
It also provides users with quick access to the toggles that are meant for enabling and disabling the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi as well as the Flashlight. Users also get the ability to kill the apps in the App Switcher. Individual apps can also be killed by enabling the ‘Always Show Close’ toggle present in the Settings app.
Enabling the ‘Badges’ toggle displays the notification badges in the App Switcher. There’s also a ‘Paging’ feature, which enables users to scroll through the 4 apps at a time, present in the app switcher.
The tweak is available on Cydia’s BigBoss repo for $2.99.
YouTubeToMp3 YouTube Plugin
Many of you might know about the YouTubeToMp3 tweak released about a year ago. The developers have released the YouTubeToMp3 YouTube Plugin which gets rid of the requirement of copying the URL of the YouTube video and pasting it to the download section, present in the previous version.
Through this tweak, a ‘Convert to Mp3’ button is placed to the native YouTube app which means that the video can be converted into the Mp3 format from the YouTube app itself. You will need to have the YouTubeToMp3 tweak in order to install the plug-in. It’s available for free at the BigBoss repo.
Protecti
This is a tweak that’s meant for people who are concerned about the data present on their jailbroken device. It enables users to protect all of the information on the device by using a simple Activator-based gesture.
This tweak is very useful for users who have family or friends borrowing their device. It also allows the owner of the device to restrict access to certain parts of the device as well as the apps. Users can choose to disable the launch as well as access to certain system settings. The same can be done for individual apps, banners and notifications, etc. There are a lot of customization options, and the data is kept safe. Protecti is available for $2.99 at the BigBoss repo in Cydia.
Zephyr
ZephyrThis is an updated version of the tweak that brings multi-tasking as well as multi-touch gestures to the iOS. The new version comes with improvements and bug fixes as well as landscape support for the iPhone, landscape app switching and notification peeking.
Through this tweak users can bring up the multitasking bar by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. It also allows users to switch between the apps by sliding to the right or left of the screen. Zephyr is available at the BigBoss for $4.99, and the upgrade is free.
These are just few of the apps. Many apps which I believe you would install as it is, but for you reference, search for:
  • SBSettings
  • Cydelete
Specially, SB settings is one of those iPhone5 Cydia tweak, which I want in default OS. It let you add quick toggle Wi-fi, 3G, Bluetooth button in the notification widget. Very handy. Also, moviebox from Bigbossrepo is must have for entertainment lovers.
Do let me know what other Cydia tweaks you are installing on your iPhone5, or iPad running iOS 6.1?
